Practicing Safety With Space Heaters

As you probably know the winter season is upon us. There are ways we can batten down the hatches and try to stay safer and warmer. Fires are a major winter hazard. It is important to have a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector in your home. Make sure your portable space heater is up to date, well designed and placed properly. The newer space heaters turn off automatically when they reach a certain temperature and if they accidently get tipped over. Choosing a place to put the portable space heater is just as important. Make sure it is clear and free of another object and it is placed on a hard, even, nonflammable surface. Avoiding extension cords with space heaters are a good practice. We always unplug them here at the end of the day. Unfortunately, some people do not heed or pay careful attention to these warnings and may have a fire that could have been preventable.
